WESTON, Conn. The challenges get bigger every year for the Aspetuck Wildcats 13-and-under cheerleading team. But the Wildcats continue to meet every one of them.
The girls won their fourth straight national championship over the weekend at the American Youth Football national championships in Orlando, Fla. The Wildcats won the Red Division with a score of 170.1, easily beating the Brick Dragons of New Jersey by more than seven points. Brick teams won three other divisions but could not get past the Wildcats.
By far, this was the hardest competition weve had during our run, said Westons Maria Terrell, the coach of the Wildcats. The bar was raised really high.
The Wildcats include girls from Weston, Easton and Redding. They advanced to the national championship by winning league, state and regional competitions. Terrell said the team saved its best for last. The girls exploded when they got out there, she said. It was their best performance of the year.
Thirteen girls on the 26-member unit have been part of all four national champions.
Weston girls on the team include: Emma Nayden, Jackie Goetz, Rachel Garner, Ashley Hall, Kelsey Cina, Caroline Terrell and Madison Liebow.
Easton cheerleaders include Melanie Gold, Claudia Gombos, Rita Gordon, Allie Loder, Kelly Kowalski, Megan Kowalski, Angela Socci, Julia Skirtch, Julia Rallo, Natalie Mullen and Julianne Licamele.
Girls from Redding are: Caitlyn Dotson, Ally Stillman, Bridget Dight, Peyton Williams, Nikki Wallin, Allison Stauffer, Emma Scavo and Kylie Longo.
