REDDING, Conn. Scrimmages are done and the fall sports season begins for real, as Joel Barlow High School athletic teams play their first games Tuesday. Other opening games continue throughout the week.
Below is the schedule for opening games for Joel Barlow High School students.
Tuesday
The field hockey team opens its season on the road at Bethel for a 3:45 p.m. game. The Falcons went 12-2-2 last season, reaching the Class M state semifinals.
The girls swimming and diving team travels to Pomperaug for a 4 p.m. meet to begin its 2012 season.
The boys and girls cross country teams open their seasons at home, hosting Masuk, Fairfield-Notre Dame and Pomperaug at 4:30 p.m.
Wednesday
The girls soccer team begins its season at Oxford at 3:45 p.m. The Falcons were 12-2-2 last season, reaching the Class L state quarterfinals.
The boys soccer team opens its season at home against Oxford at 3:45 p.m. Barlow went 8-5-2 last season.
The girls volleyball team begins its 2012 campaign at Newtown with a 6:30 p.m. match. The Falcons went 16-2 and were runners-up in the Class M state tournament, falling in five dramatic games in the state championship to Rocky Hill.
Friday
The Joel Barlow High football team hosts New Fairfield at 7 p.m. to open its season. Barlow went 3-7 last season.
