EASTON, Conn. Joel Barlows girls finished fifth in Mondays South-West Conference track and field championships while standout distance runner Logan Fulton won the 1,600 and finished second in the 3,200 for the boys.
The Falcons girls team, which went undefeated during the regular season, finished , behind Weston, New Milford, Newtown and Pomperaug. Weston won with 102.5 points for its seventh straight league title, and New Milford had 102. Newtown (83) and Pomperaug (81.5) pulled ahead of Barlow late in the meet. Barlow finished with 79. New Milford also went undefeated during the regular season. Barlow edged Weston in a dual meet last week.
Barlow had several strong performances on its girls team but no victories. The 4 x 800 relay team of Beatrice Blackwell, Jillian Marini, Caitlin Neary and Olivia Wilson took second with 9:51:40 in its first race of the day.
Other top performers for Barlow included Lindsay Doyle, who took second in the 100 hurdles and sixth in the 300 hurdles; Hannah Makowske, who took second in the shot put and javelin and fourth in the discus; Brittney Dumas, who was second in the high jump and fifth in the javelin; and Tiffany Fernandes, who was among a three-way tie for second in the high jump. Barlow was also fifth in the 4 x 400 relay with Shea Barickman, Beatrice Blackwell, Gillian Blackwell and Jillian Marini.
Fulton was the highlight on the boys side. He ran a perfect tactical race in the 1,600, overtaking Newtowns Jake Feinstein at the start of the final lap. He steadily pulled away and won in 4:20.81, exactly two seconds off the meet record.
He nearly duplicated the feat in the 3,200. Fulton and Feinstein waged a brilliant battle over the final 600 meters. But Feinstein held on, running 9:30.79 to Fultons 9:31.51.
Theo Aris added a second place finish in the high jump for Barlow, which finished 10th in team scoring. Bunnell won the boys team championship.
