EASTON, Conn. Weston Highs football team has an outside chance to reach the Class S playoffs with a victory over Joel Barlow in Thursdays annual Thanksgiving Day game. Although the chances are remote for the Trojans, the Falcons could eliminate them altogether with a victory over their archrival.
Barlow (3-6) travels to Weston for a 10 a.m. kickoff. The Trojans (6-3) need a victory and help from some other teams to qualify for states. Their first order of business is to take care of Barlow, and it will not be an easy assignment.
The Falcons, who trail the series, 5-4-2, can put points on the scoreboard. Barlow rolled over Notre Dame of Fairfield, 41-14, on Sept. 24 and Immaculate, 48-12, on Oct. 15. Even in some of its losses, Barlow has produced points, such as its 43-28 loss to Bethel and a 43-20 loss to Bunnell.
Sophomore Jack Shaban leads Barlows rushing attack with 1,016 yards and eight touchdowns. He has rushed for more than 100 yards in five straight games and in six games this season. He is averaging 10.47 yards per carry and had 194 yards on just 14 carries in the loss to Bunnell. Alex Lockwood, Steven Miller and Samuel Reed have also rushed for more than 400 yards this season. Lockwood also has three touchdown receptions.
Barlows problem has been on defense, where it is surrendering 30.5 points per game. The Falcons have yielded 40 or more points in three games, including a 55-12 loss to undefeated Masuk on Oct. 7.
Weston has won three of the last four games against Barlow, which won in 2009, 28-19. Weston won last year, 48-12.
