Many of Joel Barlow's key players were returning from injuries for the annual Thanksgiving rivalry game against Weston. Unfortunately for the Falcons, the team was about as cold as the weather at Joel Barlow High School. The Falcons were sloppy on offense, turning the ball over four times, and could not solve Weston running back Eddie Hutchins, as they were crushed 48-12.
Barlow trailed by only eight entering the second quarter. Running back Egan O'Brien had hauled in a nifty option pitch from quarterback Peter Meehan for the Falcons' only offensive score on the night. Weston then scored 13 points in less than a minute late in the first half to put the game out of reach.
"They came at us with an offense we weren't expecting," O'Brien said. "We had almost all our starters back, so we really have no excuse. We were pumped before the game, but they really just jumped on us."
The Falcons' only other score came on the third play of the fourth quarter on an interception returned six yards for a touchdown by Doug Indelicato. Weston's Hutchins racked up three touchdowns on the night, while rushing for 82 total yards.
Barlow gave up the ball on fumbles three times and Meehan threw an interception that was returned for a score. When the game was well out of reach, emotions began running high and Barlow was called for four personal foul penalties in the second half.
Barlow (2-8) finished the season on a six-game losing streak. The Aspetuck Trophy will remain in Weston for the second year in a row.
