Barlow Battles Winless Shepaug

Joel Barlow's hockey team hits the rink on Wednesday, but the 2009 conference champs are off to a rough start.

After slaughtering Masuk, 7-2, in the season opener, the Falcons have dropped two straight -- a closely fought 3-2 defeat at the hands of Sheehan last week and an 8-2 punishing by the Staples/Weston/Shelton Wreckers on Dec. 18.

But don't count the Falcons out just yet. The match  against winless Shepaug Valley High School -- at 8:15 p.m. Wednesday at the Gunnery Arena in Washington, Conn. -- will give Barlow a chance to improve to an even .500 for the season before a two-week break in January.

Michael Mattson is hot on the ice, having scored four goals with one assist in the Falcons' early season. Other standout players include Robbie Palazzo, Jack Cartafalsa and Adam Jacobs. Goalie Gordon Loery has 65 saves already this year.
