Annual Westport Minute Man Race Set for April

WESTPORT, Conn. – Registration for the Westport Young Woman’s League 34th annual 5K/10K Minute Man Race, set for April 29 at Compo Beach, is now open online, the league announced Monday.

“We’re hoping for another record-breaking number of runners this year,” said Cynthia Bernard, chairwoman of this year’s event. “Last year, we had over 1,400 participants and a beautiful day for running.”

One of the league’s major annual fundraisers, all net proceeds from the event are donated to more than 40 local charities and nonprofit organizations.

In addition to the 5K and 10K adult races, children of all ages can participate in the Kids Fun Runs, which offers three different races, based on age. Kids 5 and younger can participate in a 100-yard dash. Kids between 6-8 can run in a half-mile race and kids 9 and older can participate in the mile run. Every child who participates will receive a ribbon.

“We’re fortunate to have Mark Carmody, owner of Peak Performance Sports Camp, with us again leading the Kids Fun Runs,” Bernard said. “He has done a wonderful job organizing the kids’ races and his enthusiasm is contagious.”

Children also can keep busy with arts and crafts and a variety of other activities.

Online registration is open through April 26. Runners also can register in person at The Edge, 542 Westport Ave., Norwalk, the day before the race from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Races begin at 8:30 a.m. The cost for the 5K walk/run is $20 through April 1, $23 after April 1 and $25 on race day. Registration for the 10K race is $25 through April 1, $28 after April 1 and $30 on race day. The Kids Fun Runs are $10 each.
