From buzz cuts to purple hair extensions, teachers at Westport's Bedford Middle School are getting creative with their 'dos all for the benefit of the American Cancer Society.
Hoping to entice the community to support the school's fundraising efforts for Relay for Life a national walkathon held annually that raises money for the American Cancer Society a group of teachers, including one woman, opted to shave their locks during an after-school fundraiser May 27.
Looking for a more subtle approach to raise awareness, a group of 10 female teachers got purple hair extensions, because purple is the official Relay for Life color.
So far, the school's team, Fighting Bedford Bears, had raised more than $17,000. Although the school has participated in Relay for Life for the past 10 years, this year's event hits home because one of its own, Paul Fletcher, has cancer.
For the last seven years, Fletcher, a seventh-grade math teacher, led the Fighting Bedford Bears as captain during Relay for Life. He's been battling cancer since last fall.
Relay for Life will be held Saturday at Fairfield Ludlowe High School in Fairfield. The event begins at 7 p.m. and runs through the night. If you'd like to make a donation to the Fighting Bedford Bears, visit the team's Relay for Life donation page online.
