Westport Sunrise Rotary Club Honors Teen For Work, Dedication As An EMT

WESTPORT, Conn. -- Staples High School senior Jamie Bairaktaris was recently named Westport Sunrise Rotary’s Student of the Month. As a child in Redding he knew he wanted to be a Volunteer Emergency Medical Service technician “because the idea of running through red lights sounded pretty awesome,” he said.

As a freshman and newly arrived at Staples, Bairaktaris saw a flyer for Westport’s VEMS, pulled the email rip off tab and a week later was taking the first of the many courses EMTs must take to become certified.

Jamie is now the youngest Advanced-EMT in the state of Connecticut.

He told the Rotary Club that “helping people is what I live for.” Much of this helping, as a crew member on an ambulance rushing people to the hospital, shows him things people far older than he never see. It also led him to a career choice. Jamie is applying to nursing schools.
