Weston Students Learn Power of Giving Back

WESTON, Conn. – Just in time for the holidays, students from two Weston elementary schools were able to raise more than 120 bins of food and gifts for more than 60 needy Faifield County families.

For several weeks, students and parents of both Hurlbutt Elementary School and Weston Intermediate School collected donations and then created holiday gift baskets to be sent off to the Evergreen Network in Bridgeport.

“We are so grateful to all the parents and students for their outpouring of generosity and compassion,” said Cheryl Bryant, co-chair of community services at Hurlbutt Elementary School.

“We have set a great example for our children and will be making some very deserving families happy this holiday season,” she said.

The donations will be delivered to the families this week, just in time for the holidays.

Evergreen is a nonprofit organization supporting families affected by HIV/AIDS and other catastrophic illness.

“The income levels of these families are 200-percent below the poverty level and greatly rely on our help,” Bryant said. “In addition to providing a complete holiday meal for these families, we also collected food that could provide daily meals to sustain the children throughout the school break.”
