Weston Schools Open for Repairs, Maintenance

WESTON, Conn. – Classes may be out for the summer, but Weston’s school buildings are buzzing as repairs get under way.

On Monday, a crane was hanging over Weston Intermediate School, which is having its air-conditioning unit replaced.

"We're removing the AC unit for the school that has been problematic for three cooling seasons," said Daniel Clarke, director of school facilities. "As soon as the school ended, we decided to replace it with a new unit. If it failed during school, the building would get very warm."

Clarke said the windows at the intermediate school cannot be opened. The new air-conditioning unit will be in operation for Weston's summer school, which begins Tuesday, July 5.

The other schools will undergo thorough cleanings and have preventative maintenance done on the elevators, generators and heating systems. And all of the alarms will be tested, including the fire alarms.

Two boilers, which are more than 50 years old, will be replaced in the South House at Hurlbutt Elementary School. A boiler at Weston High School that was new in the 1960s will be replaced also.

All classrooms will also be repainted and light bulbs will be switched. All of the gym floors will be refinished, as they are "used extensively," said Clarke.
