Weston School Board Reaches Agreement With Union

WESTON, Conn. – The Weston Board of Education voted unanimously Thursday to approve a three-year collective bargaining agreement with AFSCME Local 1303, the union that covers 124 non-certified staff members.

Superintendent Colleen Palmer says the union also has approved the deal.

The tentative agreement includes a 6.84 percent wage increase over three years, which is the same amount approved by the teachers union last year, according to board member Dick Bochinski.

The increased cost in salaries would be offset by insurance savings. The board reduced the contribution it would make to employee health insurance from 75 percent retroactive to July 1 to 70 percent on July 1, 2013 and 65 percent on July 1, 2014. Employees who want to switch to another health savings account plan would have to pay the difference in cost, although it would be less than teachers will have to pay, Bochinski said.

The agreement would end the sick day buyout plan for employees hired after July 1 of this year. They would not be entitled to receive payment for accumulated sick days.

The board agreed to increase vacation days from 20 to 25 for employees with 20 years of service, which is in accordance with other union agreements, Bochinski said.

Thursday's tentative agreement is retroactive to July 1.
