WESTON, Conn. The SAT scores from the Class of 2011 dipped below the seniors of 2010 at Weston High School but not by much.
"This past year differences in the scores can be attributed to that particular cohort's strength," Weston High School Principal, Lisa Wolak said in an email to The Daily Weston. "We are very proud of our AP and SAT results."
The 166 students who took the test averaged 575 in the critical reading section, down from 587 in 2010; 595 in math, down from 596 in 2010; and 594 in writing, down from 610 in 2010. Each section is out of 800 points.
The Weston High School Parent Teacher Organization runs prep classes for the PSAT, which two Weston High School teachers teach, said Wolak. "It is important to note that SAT and AP scores are one measure of academic success. However, they are not the only measure," she said. "We at Weston High School are very proud of the richness of our curricular offerings as well as our assessment work with Teachers' College under the direction of Assistant Superintendent Tom Scarice."
A total of 215 Weston High students took 467 Advanced Placement tests in 2011, with 423 scoring a 3, 4 or 5.
"Our teachers in the different disciplines reflect on student feedback as well as performance when looking to improve their instruction," said Wolak. "This past summer, two of our art teachers participated in AP studio art workshops and one of our English teachers attended an AP literature workshop."
The school may change or increase its AP offerings in the future, she said. AP studio art and AP government were recently added, and this year the school is offering AP chemistry, which hasn't been offered in the past two years, she said. Psychology, a popular senior elective, may be offered as an AP course in the future.
