WESTON, Conn. Weston Middle School will open as scheduled Monday, Aug. 27, with the window and door construction project finished and nearly all EPA-sanctioned PCB tests completed, officials said Friday.
Air and wipe samplings near the new windows and doors and the impacted soil under the windows were being done to test for PCBs, which are considered potential carcinogens.
Tests have continued all week to ascertain that all areas of the school are free of PCBs. We received a few more positive results, so were open, Weston Superintendent of Schools Colleen Palmer said. Monday is the first day of school for all Weston students.
Two classrooms, two restrooms, the pool and one of the gymnasiums were still undergoing tests, she said. If they dont pass, we can still open and partition the areas off. The EPA has granted us permission to do that, Palmer said.
Eagle Environmental, the environmental consulting firm that has been conducting the tests, will continue to do so over the weekend. They may pass over the weekend, Palmer said.
On Friday afternoon, teachers were allowed into the school to set up their classrooms. On Sunday at 2 p.m., a ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held to officially open the school.
