WESTON, Conn. The Weston Middle School construction project is nearing completion in time for the beginning of the new school year.
As part of the project, the school is receiving daily updates on the abatement and remediation plan to ensure all areas of the school are free from PCB contamination.
Were waiting for results, but at this point everything indicates well be occupying the school next Monday, said Colleen Palmer, superintendent of Weston schools.
Daily emails will be sent to parents notifying them of the progress of the work, Palmer said.
Most areas of the school are safe, she said. But some areas, including the main office, pool, cafeteria, athletic facilities and north end classrooms, were still being tested.
The PCB tests, mandated by the Environmental Protection Agency, are conducted by wiping surfaces for particulate matter and testing the air. Eagle Environmental, an environmental consulting firm, is conducting the tests.
The abatement and remediation plan involved removing the caulking from around the windows where PCBs were found and cleaning any impacted soil under the windows that are being replaced.
The construction project has concentrated on the replacement of windows and doors. Double-pane, insulated safety glass windows were installed to replace fixtures that have been at the school since it opened in 1960.
The school is transitioning before our eyes, Palmer said.
She hopes to lead a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 2 p.m. Sunday in front of the school. Well cut the ribbons and allow people to walk in the school, she said.
