WESTON, Conn. The Weston High School class of 2012 sent 189 students out into the world Thursday with a commencement ceremony held under a large tent outside the school.
A large crowd was on hand to congratulate the graduates, who were commended for their achievements in the classroom, on the athletic fields, in the theater and in the community service projects they participated in.
After student and faculty speeches and the musical interlude, Landslide, that was performed by three students, school Principal Lisa Wolak introduced the salutatorian and valedictorian, who also spoke.
Samantha Briggs, the valedictorian, was the president of the schools Gay Straight Alliance and commended the support the organization had received from the faculty, administration and student body. Its great to see we dont stand for intolerance, she said.
Before the diplomas were handed out by Philip Schaefer, the Board of Education chair and Colleen Palmer, Westons superintendent of schools, Wolak congratulated the students on their acceptances at colleges around the country, in Scotland and Canada. You are caring, capable, resilient and ready, she said.
