Weston District Earns Top Grades on Report Cards

WESTON, Conn. – Students in the Weston school district have earned top honors for academic performance from the Connecticut Coalition for Achievement Now.

The coalition, also known as ConnCAN, issues report cards and letter grades annually to more than 1,000 Connecticut public schools. The reports are designed to “create transparency and awareness about how public schools perform,” according to the New Haven-based nonprofit advocacy group.

“Connecticut residents deserve to know how well their public schools are meeting the needs of every student,” the group says.

The scores are based in large part on student performance last year on the Connecticut Mastery Test and the Connecticut Academic Performance Test. ConnCAN also grades schools on the performance of low-income, Hispanic and African-American students. Weston was not ranked in these categories because the community is predominantly white and affluent.

According to the results, Weston High was ranked No. 2 out of 190 schools to earn an A- overall. A total of 86 percent of the students met academic goals set by the state compared with the state average of 51 percent.

A total of 86 percent of Weston High students also met state goals in math, 85 percent met the state goals in reading, 83 percent met state goals in science and 91 percent met state goals in writing.

Students at Weston Middle School were ranked No. 23 out of 298 schools and also earned an A- overall. Of the middle school students, 90 percent met academic goals set by the state compared with the state average of 69 percent.

Among middle school students, 89 percent met state goals in math, 93 percent met state goals in reading, 88 percent meet state goals in science and 90 percent met state goals in writing this year.

Weston Intermediate School students did well overall with 89 percent of students meeting state goals compared to the state average of 64 percent. The elementary school students also earned an A- this year and ranked No. 34 out of 571 schools.

Students scored well in math, with 94 percent of the students meeting state goals; 85 percent of students met state goals in reading, 88 percent met state goals in science and writing.

ConnCAN did not examine the data or grade Hurlbutt Elementary School. To see the report cards broken down by each school or as a whole district, click here.

The principals for the Weston schools and Superintendent Colleen Palmer could not be reached for comment.
