Weston Ball Fields Get a Facelift

WESTON, Conn. -- Weston school groundskeepers have been working hard to re-do the clay area on the softball and baseball fields on School Road.

Rocky Popoli and Chuck Carboni this week finished up the last of the six fields, Coley Field. The project started on Monday afternoon. The Weston Fire Department helped out by power washing the clay out of the fields, said Jo-Ann Keating, Weston schools director of finance and operations.

"It was a tripping hazard. They pushed the clay back into the infield. With the power of the hose, they really helped us get the clay back on the fields," said Keating.

Clay was turned over, re-filled and smoothed over. At the North House field, the fencing was refurbished and some areas had to be replaced because of its condition, said Keating. The benches at Cooley Field were also replaced with portable benches.

Popoli said the fields are now in "pristine condition" and "should be utilized a lot more by the town."

A machine is used to keep the clay "fresh and soft," said Popoli. "People won't get hurt and it's compacted enough to play safely."

The town gave the schools responsibility for the fields on July 1. "It was a collaborative effort with the town to rethink and do things differently," said Keating.
