EASTON and REDDING, Conn. Easton and Redding elementary and middle school scores on standardized tests rose for most grades in most subject areas, while high school scores were mixed.
The Connecticut Mastery Test (CMT) and Connecticut Academic Performance Test (CAPT) are administered annually in March to students across Connecticut. The CMT tests math, reading and writing for grades three through eight, and science for grades five and eight. The CAPT covers math, reading, writing and science for 10th-grade students. Both have five levels of performance for each subject: below basic, basic, proficient, goal and advanced.
In Easton, Grade 3 and 4 students improved their average CMT scores in math, reading and writing. Grade 5 improved in math, reading and science, but was lower in writing. Grade 7 improved in reading and writing, but dipped in math. Grade 8 improved in math, reading, writing and science. Only Grade 6 fell in two areas, math and reading, while improving in writing.
In Redding, Grade 3 and 4 students also improved their scores in all three subjects. Grade 5 students improved in math, reading and science, but fell in writing. Grade 6 scores fell in math and reading, but rose in writing. Grade 7 rose in reading and writing, but dropped in math by a single point. Grade 8 scores jumped in all four subjects.
At Joel Barlow High School, Grade 10 CAPT scores were slightly lower in math and science and slightly higher in reading and writing.
