Staples Student Steven Sobel Named A Governors Scholar

WESTPORT, Conn. – Staples High School junior Steven Sobel was recently named a Governor’s Scholar, an honor awarded to 30 academically talented high school juniors across the state.

Each year, every high school in the state may nominate one student for the honor. The student must rank in the top 5 percent of the junior class and is asked to submit an essay on an assigned topic. Professional educators from throughout the state judge completed applications, based on the essay, class rank and standardized test scores.

Sobel was one of more than 150 students nominated for this year’s honor, the office of Westport Superintendent Elliott Landon announced. He and the other Governor’s Scholars are invited to attend a May 16 luncheon with Gov. Dannel Malloy and other state leaders.

“Steven is a young man with the strength of character, abundance of talent and force of will to fix big problems, and make the world better,” Mary Elizabeth Fulco, Sobel’s English teacher, said in a statement.

Outside of the classroom, Sobel is an athlete, a musician and a volunteer. He plays the cello; is on the soccer team, the indoor and outdoor track teams; and is a member of two Staples community service groups: the Service League of Boys (SLOBs) and Wreckers in Tune, a music organization.

“I’m proud to represent Staples as a Governor’s Scholar,” Sobel said.

Sobel will attend the luncheon with his parents, Richard and Stacey Sobel, and Staples High School Principal John Dodig.
