Samantha Hodgson enjoys basketball a lot. The chance to take the ball in her hands and shoot never fails to give her a thrill. Its very fun, said Hodgson, a member of the Staples High School Unified Sports team. Its exciting.
Hodgson, 18, was one of dozens of unified sports athletes at St. Lukes School in New Canaan Tuesday for the schools Special Olympics basketball event.
Fourteen teams from eight communities, including three teams from the New Canaan YMCA, took to the court in the St. Lukes athletics complex, giving kids with special needs an opportunity to play while being cheered on by St. Lukes students and athletes. St. Lukes students held signs, cheered every basket and groaned with every missed shot.
Kate Parker-Burgard, director of community relations for St. Lukes, says the schools students enjoy cheering on the unified sports teams, as they have for the past four years.
Janay Parrott, 15, and Lizzy McLaughlin, 15, were glad to be around to root on the kids. Its wonderful. Its really uplifting, Lizzy said.
