School Board Remembers Principal

Joan Parker's death this week has saddened the Easton school community. As longtime principal of Helen Keller Middle School, Parker left an indelible legacy upon the hearts and minds of teachers, students, administrators and parents.

Her many achievements within the school system and beyond are a testament to her passion for educational excellence. In 2004, she helped establish the Easton Learning Foundation as a way to raise funds and improve community involvement in public schools.

"Joan brought a certain magic to this building," said Al Treidel, chairman of the Easton Board of Education. "She always led with a certain sense of grace and love and a very quiet strength within her. She was truly a visionary. ... Her presence will continue to be felt for years to come."

Michael Cicchetti, superintendent of Easton, Redding and Region 9 schools, also noted the powerful impression that Parker left on him and on the surrounding school communities.

"I have the highest respect for her leadership, and her unwavering commitment to education. With Joan, all things are possible and all pursuits are worthwhile. ... It was an honor to have known her."

Treidel said the Parker family wishes that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to ELF.
