Weston High School students' SAT scores remained significantly higher than state and national averages this year and Assistant Superintendent Tom Scarice called them "remarkable levels of achievement."
Scarice reported the results to the Board of Education at its meeting Monday night. Weston's position in comparison to the rest of the state and the country remains consistent every year, he said, adding that school officials use the scores as indicators of where Weston stands in comparison with other communities.
In the critical reading section, the 165 students who took the test in 2010 averaged 587 out of 800, which is approximately consistent with Weston scores since 2008. The average for Connecticut this year was 509 and the national average 501.
In math, Weston students averaged 596, compared with 514 for Connecticut and 516 nationwide. In writing, Weston scored 610, which was 10 points higher than the town average since 2008. Connecticut scored 513 and the national average was 492.
The town's combined average for the year was 1793 out of 2400 points, 7 higher than the three-year average.
Weston students also scored higher, on average, on the ACT tests, earning higher averages than all students who took all sections of the test in Connecticut -- English, Math, Reading and Science.
Board member Richard Bochinski said the consistently high scores, especially in science, should be attributed to the work of the high school's science teachers and the schools' concentration in that area.
