Region 9 Surplus To Help Fund Improvements

EASTON/REDDING, Conn. – The Easton Redding Region 9 School District Board of Education approved three capital expenditures at its meeting last week.

It will spend $50,000 to replace the flooring at the library/media center at Joel Barlow High School; $10,000 to purchase a piano for Barlow; and $8,000 to purchase sound-system equipment for Barlow’s theater.

The expenditures were approved after Peggy Sullivan, the director of finance, announced a budget surplus of $320,000. The board voted to designate $216,000 of the surplus to the capital reserve fund and $104,000 to the health-insurance reserve fund.

Sullivan said there was $63,650 in the reserve fund before the $216,000 payment was made.

There was $411,000 in the health-insurance account. Sullivan said $2,100,000 in claims is paid annually, with the balance coming from employee contributions and the operating budget.

The $320,000 budget surplus was higher than usual and came from refinancing debt and savings derived from keeping two students at Barlow who had been placed outside the school system. Savings also accrued from lower costs for snow removal, electricity and legal fees and lower tuition reimbursement fees for teachers, Sullivan said.
