WESTON, Conn. For Dana Lintell's son, the delayed start of school only highlighted his excitement about going back.
"The children wanted to get back. When we had to stop going back, it caused them to be anxious, compared to being able to start up right away," said Lintell, president of Hurlbutt Elementary School's parent-teacher organization.
Lintell joined other parents Tuesday afternoon who were eager to meet their kids' new teachers. The school hosted meet and greets for parents and teachers before and after school Tuesday.
Lintell's son, Colby, said his favorite part about kindergarten was eating lunch in the cafeteria for the first time. Kaylin Faiman, also a kindergartner, had fun Tuesday, playing with Legos, playing "mommy and daddy" and reading a book.
Lintell's goals for her son this year are to "be happy, to learn to love school so he can truly understand the importance of academia," she said.
Kaylin's mom, Elana, said she hopes her daughter learns "to socialize and get used to the school setting."
"The Mile of Safety" allowed the first day of school to travel without a hitch, according to Officer Joe Miceli, who was on duty Tuesday. Officers patrol the school campus from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. during the first couple of weeks of school to make sure the cars and buses flow and drivers obey traffic laws. The officers control the stop lights during busy hours and are on-hand in the event of an emergency. After the first of couple weeks, the officer's hours on campus are reduced to 7 to 10 a.m. and 1 to 4 p.m. Miceli said there were no incidents Tuesday, and the first day was quiet compared with previous years.
