WESTON, Conn. ? Opening day for Weston Middle School remained in question as of Wednesday night, although all indications from school officials were that the window and door replacement project would be completed and the school would open on schedule Monday.
Superintendent of Schools Colleen Palmer said the school will open as long as all classrooms and bathrooms meet PCB standards mandated by the Environmental Protection Agency.
These areas passed the most recent tests, but the pool and gymnasium did not and are still being tested, according to Peter Folino, vice president of Eagle Environmental. Folino said there's a high chance the pool and gymnasium will be ready by Monday.
Folino's firm is continuing to conduct air and wipe samplings on new windows and doors and impacted soil under the new windows. The hitch is that PCB readings can vary from day to day, Folino said. The tests are performed on an ongoing basis and areas that fail are cleaned and tested again, he said. He said the elevated levels were not caused by the construction work this summer.
Both courtyards were cleaned to a point where they met the standards, Folino told the School Building Committee Wednesday. Folino said not all of the soil will pass inspection in time for the school opening and will be covered with polyethylene with wood chips on top to meet EPA standards.
The Board of Education is sending out daily emails notifying parents of the progress of the tests and plans to host a ribbon cutting ceremony Sunday at 2 p.m. to officially open the school.
