EASTON, Conn. Joel Barlow High School senior Carly Hohorst said she has to be ready for anything when shes on an EMT call and she demonstrated that while attending to a victim of a mock auto accident at the Barlow Palooza festival Thursday evening.
Hohorst was one of the EMT students whose skills were tested in front of a professional EMT evaluator at the event.
The victim was hit by flying glass and metal pieces and she bandaged and splintered his arm to stop the bleeding, applied a hare traction splint, back-boarded and collared him and arranged for his transport to the hospital, said Bernice Scherb, the Georgetown EMS captain who evaluated her. She did a very good job.
The EMT demonstration was one of many events at the annual Palooza festival, which shows off student achievement, said Barlow Principal Thomas McMorran. The sixth annual Palooza program was a celebration of learning that showcased art, music and exhibits from clubs and classes. Hundreds of students demonstrated their expertise as classmates, teachers, administrators and parents looked on.
We show off their highest accomplishments in every way we can think of it, he said.
While the EMT students were showing off their medical training in back of the school, the X Minute Break a capella singing group was performing in the main lobby. Individual members of the group stepped up to perform solo while the rest of the group harmonized.
They audition to be part of the group and sing pop music, said Julie Givoni, their music teacher. They sing at a number of events throughout the year and performed at the Ridgefield Playhouse in December.
Meanwhile, art students were demonstrating their pottery and jewelry making skills in the auditorium lobby. Samantha Smith, a senior, said her class makes lanterns, mugs, bowls and plates and is encouraged to do creative projects, such as molding a bowl with hands on it.
We have free reign to do whatever we want to do, she said.
