Joel Barlow Students Match Wits on TV Quiz Show

EASTON, Conn. – A Joel Barlow High School team will make its Hollywood debut this month when it appears on the MSG Varsity high school academic quiz show, “The Challenge.”

“The Challenge” showcases high school students from across the tri-state area. Joel Barlow High School students will take on Bridgeport’s Warren Harding High School on Jan 26. The team includes Stephen Tschudi, Ben Lewson, Amy Kaplan (captain), David Kang and Lia Cirelli (alternate). The academic advisor is Michael Ecsedy.

“We’re proud to celebrate academics on MSG Varsity through 'The Challenge' and to provide these extremely bright students a platform to showcase their talents with their communities,” said Theresa Chillianis, MSG Varsity’s general manager.

On the show Jared Cotter - an "American Idol" semi-finalist - asks students history, art and literature, current events, math and science questions in front of a live studio audience.

“Each season I am blown away by the students’ intelligence and their wide array of knowledge in so many diverse categories,” said Cotter. “I’m really excited to get the season started and to see which teams are going to bring it.”

Winning teams will advance through a series of elimination rounds, with one school in each region being crowned regional champion and winning $2,500. The winning teams from each region go on to “The Challenge” Championship, where they square off in a tri-state showdown.

The tri-state champion will receive $10,000 and each student participating in the final “Challenge” championship game will receive $500.

Check out Joel Barlow in action on Jan. 24, at 6:30 p.m., on MSG Varsity, which is channel 14 on Cablevision.
