Joel Barlow Progress Reports Available Online

EASTON, Conn. – Parents can check up on their child’s progress at Joel Barlow High School as mid-quarter progress reports are now available online. But the school cautions they might not be accurate.

In a letter to parents, Barlow’s Head of School Thomas McMorran said, “Using the parent portal, you can check on your child's current status in his or her courses. Please remember that mid-quarter grades are an indication of how a student has been performing. In many courses major assignments, essays or projects will not be assessed until after this report has come out.”

If parents have any questions about major projects, they can contact the teacher directly.

Although all progress reports are up online, McMorran said they could be erroneous. In the letter he wrote, “Due to a technical issue … some students may have been incorrectly identified as earning a place on the honor roll or the high honor roll. This did not affect first quarter grades, but did affect mid-year reporting.”

McMorran said the error could be due to “an algorithm in the program converted their earned grade to a generic numerical grade. This should not have occurred, and in some cases may have increased or decreased the student's grade point average incorrectly.”

The school has taken the correct steps and recalculated the honor roll. The revised version is now posted outside the school’s guidance office. “We apologize for this inaccuracy,” McMorran wrote.
