Joel Barlow High Plans to Open Monday

EASTON, Conn. – Joel Barlow High School is still set to open on Monday, but those plans could change over the weekend, Superintendent of Schools Bernard Josefsberg said in a statement Friday to Easton parents.

In the letter to parents, Josefsberg wrote, “Our plan to reopen our schools on Monday hinges upon road accessibility. At the moment, numerous road blockages, trees on wires and low-hanging wires are worrisome. And so, even though our buildings are ready to receive students and staff, we still don’t know whether students and staff can safely reach those buildings.”

Joel Barlow High School, shared by Easton and Redding, has been closed since Oct. 31 because of extensive power loss and road damages that occurred during last weekend's historic snowstorm. Although the high school students have not been in class, Easton’s Samuel Staples Elementary School and Helen Keller Middle School have been open.

“Right now, we are scheduled to reopen on Monday. We believe that we can reopen even if road conditions are less than ideal," Josefsberg said. "But it’s a matter of degree. To better gauge the situation, we plan on putting some buses out on the roads Sunday morning.”

If school officials believe the roads are still too hazardous to bus students to school, then they will try to make the cancellation call as soon as possible Sunday.
