Joel Barlow Appoints Assistant Principal

The following is a statement from the Region 9 School District, which includes Easton and Redding.

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Mary Ann Sheehy, our current dean of students and director of student activities, to the position of assistant principal. I wish to thank the members of Barlow's staff and faculty, administrators and our student representative who served on the interview panel. I would also like to thank Dr. Mike Cicchetti for his counsel and input throughout the process.

Ms. Sheehy has served the Barlow community with distinction for three years. During her tenure as dean, our school has experienced steady improvement in school spirit and an accompanying decline in student discipline. Before joining Barlow, Ms. Sheehy served as the literacy specialist at Helen Keller Middle School. Before joining the Region 9 Educational Tri-District, Ms. Sheehy taught English at Weston High School and was English Department chair at New Milford High School.

Ms. Sheehy received her bachelor of science in English/education and her master's of science in the same field from Western Connecticut State University. She earned her sixth-year degree in educational management from the University of Bridgeport. In addition to expertise as a literacy instructor, Ms. Sheehy is an accomplished curriculum designer.

One of her colleagues wrote, "Mary Ann's friendship, counsel, wise and loving insights, love of adolescents, knowledge of behavioral management, pedagogy, and curriculum design make her oneof the most effective teachers with whom I have ever worked." A parent shared the following: "I am extremely confident that Mary Ann will continue to use her talents to awaken in students, parentsand teachers a drive for answers and insights that will enlarge their life experience. I am truly grateful that she is a part of my children's school system."

Knowing the high caliber of Ms. Sheehy's service to Joel Barlow High School, it was important that the interview and search process be conducted with rigor. More than 105 applicants were screened,11 were interviewed by the principal. Four were brought to a panel of teachers, support staff, administrators and a student representative. Dr. Cicchetti and I interviewed the final twocandidates.

Ms. Sheehy is taking over from Mrs. Anne Kipp, who is retiring this year after 33 years as a counselor and administrator at Barlow. Please join me in congratulating Ms. Mary Ann Sheehy in this new role.
