EASTON, Conn. With his house still dark, James Bebon and his family left town Sept. 1 and returned only a few days before the start of school Tuesday.
James, a seventh-grader at Helen Keller Middle School, said it was "kind of" tough to prepare for school after not having power for so long. "We had no water. We couldn't take showers we were stinky. We went out to eat and the pizza places had no bread," he said.
James and other Easton middle-schoolers rushed to the Easton Community Center after their first day of school Tuesday. "We saw our new teachers, and we got to see our friends. It was nice," said James.
Jack Haller, also a seventh-grader, said the teachers outlined what will go on during the next week, the next month and the rest of the year.
"We got used to our new teachers, and said 'hi' to old friends," said Jack. "We have to figure out their personalities as the year goes on." Jack's goals for the year are to "get good grades so I don't lose my privileges."
Chase Vincelette, a fourth-grader at Samuel Staples Elementary School, said it's "always fun to see friends and make new ones." His sister, Chloe, a first-grader, said her first day was fun and different because she was in a new classroom. Bryn, Chloe's twin, said she likes her teacher and art.
"I just want them to be happy and have a well-rounded, fun year. I want them to experience everything," said the kids' mother, Amy Vincelette.
