EASTON, Conn. When asked why they chose another high school as opposed to Joel Barlow, parents of Easton students said they were searching for a more disciplined environment and a better education.
Superintendent Bernard Josefsberg, who conducted an attrition survey of Easton parents, said students frequently decide to attend Fairfield Prep and the proximity of the school to Easton is a reason families choose to live in town.
He said about 10 percent of students in Fairfield County towns choose not to attend public high schools. The rate is somewhat higher in Easton and slightly lower in Redding, he said.
Some parents also sought out other schools for better athletic opportunities and religious instruction.
Students at Helen Keller Middle School are invited to Barlow to check it out before they decide whether they want to enroll through a program started by principal Tom McMorran.
When asked what response the school system will have to the survey, Josefsberg said, We need to probe more deeply. Im satisfied there is no fleeing from the school. Were always looking to improve, and the challenge for us is to show continuous improvement.
