EASTON, REDDING, Conn. This years enrollment numbers for Easton and Redding public schools were released this week but continue to change and wont be finalized until school starts next week.
The numbers will change because parents wait until the last minute to enroll their kids, said Superintendent of Region 9 Schools Bernard Josefsberg.
The number of students scheduled to attend Joel Barlow High School was 1,023, a slight increase from last years enrollment of 1,008. The Helen Keller Middle School in Easton shows a gain of three students, from 390 to 393.
There were decreases at the Samuel Staples Elementary School (from 666 to 611), the Redding Elementary School (from 615 to 579) and John Read Middle School (from 592 to 549).
Josefsberg declined to comment on the differences between this years and last years numbers, noting, The question is whether the enrollment figures are consistent with enrollment projections. The numbers are close to the predictions, theres no dramatic break, he said.
He noted that predictions are for declining enrollment the next three to five years but kindergarten enrollment at Redding Elementary School is up, which is an important number because kindergarten is a gateway into the system.
