One Nintendo Wii system needs 19 watts of electricity to operate. As part of Go Green Week, second-graders at Samuel Staples Elementary School learned about solar panels Thursday.
The students formed a line and walked outside to the soccer field with representatives from PurePoint Energy, who rolled out a solar panel.
Gavin Blawie, a second-grader in Maureen Bachelders class, measured the amount of volts generated on the soccer field while another student measured the amps. The solar panel was able to generate enough watts at the soccer field to power three Wii systems.
On Friday, the students will see how robotic grasshoppers with solar panel backs vibrate in the sun.
The students also created Eco-Art as part of Go Green Week. Each Eco-Art piece was created from recycled materials. On Friday, students will check out the artwork in each of the five classes.
Samuel Staples adapted an Earth Treaty in which the school community commits to care for the planet and, through its efforts, will teach children to become conscientious caretakers of the environment.
