Samuel Staples Elementary School students sat in wheelchairs, leaned their arms back and hurled basketballs at a hoop. They wriggled their bodies in an attempt to make it in the basket without the use of their leg muscles to help. Only a few baskets were made.
On Wednesday, Diversity Day took students through the lives of people with differences those who are blind, who are without limbs, who are deaf, those with diabetes and asthma, and who are from different parts of the world.
Students wore masks to blind their eyes as they traveled through an obstacle course of desks and bookbags to find their way to their seats.
This is the fifth year of Diversity Day at Staples Elementary with Susan DiScipio as the chairwoman. Its basically all about accepting differences and respecting them, said DiScipio.
With the help of the Easton Learning Foundation, teachers were provided with the schools signature book, Winters Tail. Winter is a dolphin who had to learn how to swim again after losing its fin.
Students spent 50 minutes in the gym rotating through learning stations where they had to put themselves in another life and learn to function.
