Easton Cancels February Vacation

Easton kids enjoyed eight snow days this year and four delayed openings – but at a price. Superintendent Dr. Michael Cicchetti announced Monday that February vacation will be canceled to make up the days missed.

"Please know that this was a very difficult decision and that the boards thoughtfully considered more than one option before voting to cancel the February vacation," Cicchetti wrote in an email to the community. The school board "saw the February vacation as an opportunity for an immediate continuation of instruction."

The last day for Joel Barlow High School is now June 17. Helen Keller and Samuel Staples will now end on June 21.

The schools will be lenient with families who have already planned vacations during February. "Please be assured that administrators will work with parents and teachers at each school to develop a plan for those who already have vacation plans that cannot be cancelled," Cicchetti said. "Absences will be excused and students will be given adequate time to make up missed work."

The school board's action reflects the unusually high number of weather-related interruptions during the past five weeks. "This winter has created several challenging situations, especially the need to respond to the excessive number of snow days thus far this school year," Cicchetti said.
