Barlow Student To Receive 9/11 Humanity Award

REDDING, Conn. – The Peter Burton Hanson Award for Humanity will be given to a Joel Barlow High School student Tuesday as the school commemorates 9/11 at a ceremony starting at 9:11 a.m.

The annual financial award is given to a Barlow student in honor of Hanson, a member of the Barlow class of 1987 who died at age 32 in the crash of United Airlines Flight 175 on Sept. 11, 2001.

Gina Pin, Barlow’s assistant principal, said Hanson was on the flight with his wife and 2-year-old daughter, the youngest victim of the crash.

The award goes to a student who “embodies Peter’s characteristics of dedication to social justice, love of the arts, concern for the environment, volunteerism and sensitivity to issues of peace,” a statement released by the school said.
