Barlow Course Targets Study Skills

Your high school student may have spent the summer hitting the books, but chances are more time was spent on the couch and at the beach than pouring over math questions. With this in mind, Joel Barlow High School is bringing back the S4-Successful Study Skills program on Aug. 23 and 24.

The program is “based entirely on educational research and proven benchmark studies and taught by Connecticut certified Master-degreed teachers,” according to a release by the school. It teaches student a variety of organizational and study skills.

The lesson plan will cover goal-setting and time management, note-taking and question-asking skills, along with reading strategies, tips on targeting the important details in reading, notebook organization and test preparation strategies. The instruction aims to improve student learning.

The program consists of two three-hour sessions. There is room for only 15 students, so those interested should register ahead of time.

“We offer this arrangement as a matter of convenience for our students,” Tom McMorran, Head of Joel Barlow High School, wrote in a letter to the school community. “Please know that our regular curriculum includes course offerings that address the same content as these programs and [that] we have three in-house centers available every day for students,” he said referring to the school’s College and Career Center, Writing Center and Academic Center.
