The seat is currently held by state Senate Minority Leader John McKinney, who is seeking the Republican nomination to run for governor.
“I have watched Connecticut sink further and further in terms of every relevant economic indicator. We are last in the nation in economic growth and first in the nation in terms of our total per capita tax burden and state debt," Gonzalez said in a statement. "The course we are on is unsustainable and it is hurting our hardworking families and businesses. It’s time to send legislators to Hartford with proven business and leadership skills, and that is why I am running for state senator.”
Gonzalez, a Cuban refugee who immigrated to the United States when he was 9, recently retired after a 35-year career at General Electric, with his last four years spent as the chief risk officer for GE Capital’s Europe, Middle East, and Africa region.
The Fairfield resident pledged to use his practical experience and financial expertise to right Connecticut’s economy.
"It’s time that Hartford politicians start to act responsibly and logically. They shouldn’t be able to get away with bankrupting the state on the backs of the average citizen," Gonzalez said in a statement. "If I’m elected, I vow to bring a sense of rationality and sensibility to the capital.”
