U.S. Rep. Jason Chaffetz, House Oversight Committee chairman, asked Comey to testify before a public session at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 24.
Chaffetz has also set a deadline for the same date, May 24, for acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe to disclose documents involving the recently ousted FBI director and Trump.
Comey has not yet confirmed he will be able to attend at that day and time.
Chaffetz's invitation came just hours before former FBI Director Robert Mueller was named special counsel in the investigation of possible collusion between Trump campaign staffers and Russia.
Trump has come under fire recently after dismissing Comey amid an investigation into the president’s ties, communications, and potential informational links to Russia. According to multiple media reports, Trump, in a one-on-one conversation, asked Comey to end his investigation of former national security adviser Michael Flynn shortly before he fired Comey.
Comey lived in Westport while he was general counsel of Bridgewater Associates, the world's largest hedge fund. He and his wife sold their Westport property earlier this year at a loss.
