Bobby Megel, 28, of New Haven was arrested Monday by Westport Police on two counts of second-degree larceny. He was arrested at the Bridgeport Correctional Center, where he was held on other charges related to autobody scams. He was arrested by Stamford Police in November on similar charges.
Megel's father, Jimmy Megel, 44, is serving a 10-year sentence that included taking nearly $138,000 from an 88-year-old Stamford man for repairs on his 1991 Chevrolet Caprice in 2013.
Westport Police said that Bobby Megel approached a man above the age of 60 in the Barnes & Noble parking lot in August and offered to repair the man's vehicle. Megel allegedly asked for $800 for the repairs, but the man paid him only $100, police said. The man later discovered that the repairs actually did more damage to the vehicle, police said.
The man learned of Megel's arrest on similar charges in news reports and notified Westport Police.
In the second incident, which occurred in October, Megel solicited the victim to repair dents in his vehicle while he was in the parking lot of 397 Post Road E. The victim paid $200, but as time went on, the victim noticed that Megel actually did more damage to the vehicle, police said. The complainant also noticed Megel in news reports and went to Westport Police about his incident.
Megel was also charged with two counts of not having a license to sell or repair motor vehicles. He was held on a combined $35,000 bond for a Dec. 22 court date.
