At 3:15 a.m. June 16, officers were dispatched to Cross Highway in Westport on a report of a crash with injuries. When they arrived, officers found an unoccupied vehicle that was upside. The owner was identified as 51-year-old Stephen Moran of Trumbull, police said.
Moran was located walking in the area and injured, and officers detected the odor of alcohol on his breath, according to police. He claimed a male broke into his house through his garage, knocked him out, kidnapped him and stole his car, according to police. He also provided a description of the kidnapping suspect, police said.
Police said that Westport detectives worked with Trumbull investigators and determined that the kidnapping never happened and that Moran had made the whole thing up. A search warrant for Moran's blood results also showed that his blood alcohol content was above the legal limit at the time of the crash, according to police.
A warrant was issued for his arrest on Oct. 13, and he turned himself in on Tuesday, Nov. 14. He was charged with operating under the influence, evading responsibility, interfering with an officer and second-degree falsely reporting an incident. He was released on a $5,000 bond and will appear in court on Nov. 27.
