WESTPORT, Conn. -- Westport Police Chief Foti Koskinas caught two men while they were in the process of trying to cash a fraudulent money order Thursday, according to police.

Koskinas saw a vehicle sitting in the Greens Farms Railroad Station parking lot with its blinker on, the engine running, and the driver laid back, police said. When he went to check on the driver, Koskinas could immediately smell marijuana as the window rolled down, according to police.

Other officers were called to the scene, and the driver, 24-year-old Lorenzo Woods of Jamaica, N.Y., was asked out of the car, police said. Police said Woods was evasive and unable to explain why he was there. While the officers were speaking with him, they were approached by another man, later identified as 23-year-old Theophilus Brown of Brooklyn, N.Y., police said.

Officers determined that the two were attempting to cash a fraudulent money order worth $1,000 at the post office, police said. They found four fraudulent money orders with different names on them, as well as a credit card with another person's name on it, according to police. The card was checked with a credit card reader, which showed information different from what was embossed on the card itself, police said.

Woods and Brown were taken to police headquarters and charged with first-degree larceny, unlawful completion/reproduction of a credit card, conspiracy to commit fifth-degree larceny, criminal attempt at fifth-degree larceny, criminal impersonation and conspiracy to commit first-degree forgery. They were released on promises to appear in court on March 2.
