The incident began when Westport Police Officer David Scinto saw a suspicious vehicle near the Saugatuck train station parking lot off Interstate 95, Sgt. Ryan Paulsson said in a statement.
A check of the vehicle's registration found that the plates did not match the vehicle, Paulsson said.
The vehicle, driven by Nelson Rivera, 35, of 2426 E. Main St., proceeded north on I-95, where Scinto conducted a traffic stop near Exit 18, police said.
As Scinto approached the vehicle, Rivera drove away at a high rate of speed, police said. Scinto attempted to stop the vehicle as it traveled north on I-95, police said.
Fairfield police and the Connecticut State Police were notified and assisted when the vehicle left I-95 at Exit 19 in Southport, Paulsson said.
As the vehicle took the off ramp at Exit 19, Rivera drove at both Scinto and Fairfield Police units, narrowly missing the vehicles, police said.
He continued east on Route 1 in Fairfield, eventually stopping his vehicle in the area of Sasco Hill Road in Fairfield, police said.
Rivera was then taken into custody and transported to Westport Police Headquarters.
He was charged with criminal attempt at assault on an officer, interfering with an officer, possession of narcotics, possession of narcotics not in original container, disobeying signal of officer/elude, reckless driving, operating a motor vehicle without Insurance, failure to display plates, misuse of registration plates and operating an unregistered vehicle.
He was held on $10,000 bond for a court date of June 11.
