WESTPORT, Conn. — A 28-year-old Westport man originally believed to be a witness to a Saturday morning burglary on Hideaway Lane was arrested and charged in the incident, police said.
Nicholas Thomas, of Drumlin Road, was charged with second-degree burglary and sixth-degree larceny after police interviewed him as a potential witness and connected him to evidence from the burglary, the police report said.
The homeowners reported the burglary shortly before 7 a.m. When officers arrived, they were told that a purse stolen during the burglary was returned by a man who said he saw another man drop the purse on Hales Road near Hillspoint Road, according to the police report.
Detectives found and identified the witness as Thomas, police said. During an interview with Thomas, Detective John Rocke was able to disprove Thomas’ story that he was a witness by linking Thomas to evidence from the burglary, police said. Thomas later confessed to the crime, police said, and was taken into custody.
Officers also found narcotics in the vehicle Thomas is believed to have used in the burglary, police said. He was additionally charged with possession of narcotics and four counts of third-degree forgery. He was held on a $20,000 bond and is due in court on May 7.
Police said Thomas entered the home through an unlocked rear door during the overnight hours as the homeowners slept.
