Westport Firefighters Knock Down Blaze That Spread To Attic Of Home

WESTPORT, Conn. — Westport firefighters doused a blaze that began in the walls around the fireplace and spread to the attic of a home on Woods Grove Road home late Tuesday afternoon, fire officials said.

The fire was reported at about 5:40 p.m. in the ranch-style home, Assistant Fire Chief Brian Meadows said in a statement.

Engine 2 arrived at the home first and saw smoke showing from the roof, Meadows said. Firefighters removed the occupants, who were trying to extinguish the blaze, he said.

Firefighters from Engine 2 attacked the seat of the fire, which was in the walls around the fireplace and extended into the attic, Meadows said. Engine 4 extinguished the fire in the attic, he said.

Firefighters from Truck 1 ventilated the home, while other firefighters opened up the walls and ceiling to confirm the blaze was out, he said.

Firefighters from Wilton and Norwalk, provided help at the scene, and Fairfield fire crews provided station coverage.

The Westport Fire Department’s Fire Marshal's Office was called to the scene to investigate the cause of the fire, which started in the area around the fireplace.
