The flag will fly throughout the month of April as part of the "Flags Across America" program. The Westport Fire Department has participated in the program for five years.

"The need for organ and tissue donation remains a constant need across the United States," said a press release. "Every day, 18 people die while waiting for organ transplants in the United States. There are over 1,400 people in Connecticut alone waiting for organ transplants to save their lives.

"About 1.5 million people receive tissue transplants ranging from tendons and ligaments to repair injured appendages, to corneas which restore sight to the blind. One registered donor has the ability to save or improve the lives of over 50 people."

Westport Fire Department representatives said the organ and tissue donation is an extension of the department's mission to save lives.

Residents can register as organ and tissue donors through the Donate Life Month program
