Weston Police: Don't Leave Dogs In Cars During Heat Wave

WESTON, Conn. – As the Weston area continues to bake in a summer heat wave, the Weston Police remind residents not to leave their pets in cars during the summer heat.

Temperatures in Weston are expected to reach the mid-90s on Tuesday, with a heat index of nearly 100. The inside of a car can reach up to 130 degrees in these conditions, officials say.

“A dog left inside a car under these conditions can suffer irreversible internal organ damage or, worst case, death,” the Weston Police said on its Facebook page Tuesday.

Anyone who sees a dog locked in a car should contact 911 immediately, police say. It is illegal to confine or leave a dog unattended for an “unreasonable amount of time” according to state law. Penalties range from a $100 fine for the first offense to more than $500 for multiple offenses.

“If you have to leave domestic animal outside for an extended time during this heat wave, please remember to have a shaded area and plenty of water available,” the Weston Police update says.
