Weston Man Who Hoarded Hundreds Of Birds, Snakes Ordered To Undergo Therapy

WESTON, Conn. -- A Weston man charged last year with hoarding hundreds of exotic birds, reptiles and snakes in his home has been sentenced to undergo therapy, according to the Weston Forum.

Daniel Kopulos had been arrested in October and charged with animal cruelty after police found hundreds of animals in his Newtown Turnpike home the previous month. Police said at the time that the animals were kept in the home because the Kopulos had lost the lease to his New York-based pet store. Many of the animals seized were in poor condition or dead, police said.

The Weston Forum reported that Kopulos appeared in court on Wednesday, where a judge ordered him to undergo weekly therapy sessions for two years. The charges will be dismissed if he complies with the order and does not get arrested again during the next two years, according to the Weston Forum.

After the animals were discovered, many private organizations came forward to help take care of the ones that were still alive. The town also reportedly set aside $21,000 to care for some of them, though the Weston Forum reported that Kopulos had paid restitution to the town.
